Gears Of War

The problem with hype is that you start to believe it. Once that happens, you're not going to be happy with a game that's merely great. That's why it was frustrating to play Gears of War. After being told time and time again that this was going to be the best thing since sliced bread, that this was going to look just as good—if not better—than anything on the PS3, my expectations were so high as to make almost anything less a disappointment. After adding in the trailer using the Donnie Darko track "Mad World," even a great game won't be enough. I'm expecting an experience.

Fortunately, Gears of War lives up to most of these things, but the actual act of playing was much different than what I expected.

At some point in the future man has colonized a planet called Serra, and turned it into a beacon of civilization, filled with proud and handsome architecture. Think Roman Empire before it fell. Of course, what we didn't know was that underneath the surface of the planet lived the Locust, a race of violent, brutal creatures who one day decided enough was enough. That was Emergence Day, when the Locust broke through and slaughtered most of the populace. We decided if we couldn't have the land, no one could, so we razed the cities from orbit. Thus began the war, a war we were losing. Marcus Fenix was a soldier who broke ranks to save his father, and was sentenced to imprisonment for it. Years later, things have changes, barely any soldiers are left, and he has busted out to try to turn the tide of the war.

Marcus emerges into a Serra he can barely recognize. Everything is gone, rubble. There's not much of a planet to fight for, but what other option is there? It's fight or die. So he picks up a gun, and our game begins.
